MOSS is working to help education in Swaziland next and already have a donation of a large quantity of computers, but need a transport and logistics sponsor to collect and store the computers in Melbourne. We also need a sponsor to donate part of a shipping container load to Africa - preferably Durban. Email moss@ihug.com.au if you are able to help.

US NGO picks up the work of MOSS

The US NGO ‘Palms for Life fund’ has taken up the MOSS Water Project model, allocating funds to install 120 water tanks in Swaziland schools. From the Palms for Life website...

‘The project is executed by our partner organization Action Four Africa. It focuses on equipping rural-poor communities, specifically schools, with improved water supply (for drinking and agriculture productivity) and enhanced water sanitation systems. It will also create sustainable school gardens to improve food security for children, their families and communities in Swaziland at large.’

The project will provide a reliable source of clean water for 40,000 children. MOSS Water Project is stoked that Palms For Life have adopted this important initiative. While there is still work to be done in providing opportunities for children to access life’s necessities this is a great achievement. Well done, Palms for Life!

Umpakasi’s water supply

The water supply for the villagers of Umpakasi was drawn from the ground, and required children, often the girls, drawing and carrying the water for the family, keeping them away from school for protracted periods.

Women digging the 5100 metres of trenches - by hand! The trench is 1 metre deep and 600mm wide. This is very hard work, and proof of the determination these people have to end their need to manually carry water all day just to survive.

This is 1 of 24 installed water taps in Umpakasi. Now girls will be able to go to school , rather than carry water all day for their families - often up to 4 kilometres away.

Education is the road out of poverty, so stand tall if you bought a t-shirt, sausage or bid at the MOSS Jam charity auction!

The MOSS Foundation volunteers would like to thank Simon McKeon, 2011 Australian of the Year, for his endorsement of the work of MOSS.

Check the plans for new water infrastructure in a remote Swaziland village that MOSS is sponsoring. Once this project is completed up to 700 people will have a clean and reliable water supply. That means that girls can get an education instead of carrying water up to four kilometers. A few dollars to get this project off the ground will help these people work their way out of poverty.

Before these people had a water tank, babies were dying of water born diseases from being fed formula made with dirty bore water. Girls had to walk up to 5 miles to get that dirty water from the only bore in the area. The water comes out of the bore slowly, so they had to queue up for the water and then carry it back home. Just collecting water took them so long that there was no time for school.

Now the government will fill up the tank with clean water. They would have supplied water before, but there was nowhere to store it.
